The Sanctuary of Santa Caterina del Sasso Ballaro

Set into the cliffs high above the lake on the Lombard shore, the Sanctuary of Santa Caterina is a complex of three buildings dating from the 13th century.  Dedicated by its founder, Alberto Besozzo of Arolo, to St Catherine of Alexandria, the monastery has been over the centuries home to several communities of monks.

The natural beauty of its situation between the cliffs and the lake is enhanced by the three buildings in the complex, and by the cycles of frescoes decorating the Chapel of St Catherine and in the two interior churches, Santa Maria Nuova and San Nicola.
